Toronto high school first to supply students with electronic reading devices

Yesterday, Amazon.com received a ton of press coverage with the announcement that its Kindle 2 mobile reading device is now available in Canada. But a far more interesting story regarding mobile reading technology hardly received any coverage at all, and I think it’s a much bigger story.

I’m talking about a Toronto-based high school that has made the transition from printed to digital textbooks. Students at Blyth Academy have teamed up with Sony of Canada and Pearson Canada to make course materials, assignments, outlines and background reading materials available in digital format, through a Sony(R) Reader Digital Book

This is the first time that a school has made an e-reader available to its students, and it signals the future of classroom learning. Here’s a quote from a press release issued by Blyth Academy, Sony Canada and Pearson Canada:

“The digital content we’ve acquired, coupled with the students’ Sony Readers, will dramatically improve student access to textbooks, collateral material, literature and reading in general,” said Sam Blyth, Chair, Blyth Academy. “Our student survey shows that they are twice as likely to read a book available in an e-book format as in hard copy form.”

This move to supply students with e-readers represents the future of classroom learning, not only in Canada, but around the world.

It’s just another move to switch from printed format to digital for computer-savvy students. The younger generation is completely ‘into’ computers for everything. This is a sad day for printed materials.
