Advertising Standards Canada says ‘no’ to unsafe car ads
Advertising Standards Canada (ASC) has introduced new guidelines aimed at preventing the depiction of unsafe driving in car ads.
The thinking is that auto ads featuring any form of reckless driving (speeding, distracted drivers) could influence motorists to behave in a similar fashion, thus endangering themselves and others.
ASC said it’s responding to an increasing number of complaints by consumers, who feel that certain car ads promote irresponsible driving. Does the ASC have any data showing a co-relation between adrenalin-filled car ads and traffic accidents?
The new guidelines mean that ad agencies and automakers must be careful not to show drivers behaving illegally behind the wheel. If an agency steps over the line, it won’t be fined, but it could be forced to pull the offending ads. This could be costly for the agencies and the automakers.
I think these new guidelines are completely unnecessary. What’s next? Banning car chases in films? Slapping warning labels on DVDs that contain scenes of reckless driving? Banning video games that feature car crashes? How does Grand Theft Auto achieve immunity?
If the ASC wants to impose new guidelines, it should focus on ads that are boring and irritating. Like that Cadbury commercial featuring the kids with the twitching eyebrows, or those insufferable Swiffer commercials.
The absence of adrenalin-filled car ads is only going to make the advertising landscape a little duller and less interesting.

I hate the nanny-state we have become but I have to disagree with you on this one. The difference between car chase movies & grand theft auto and car commericals is these are not car sales ads.
Unfortunately, there are a lot of stupid people out there. They’ll try some of the stuff in the ads and then blame the car manufacturers and anyone else but themselves. If there are accidents…medical costs go up, insurance costs go up, courts get bogged down in civil cases. All this costs everybody else money.
I really don’t care about the people who are stupid and think they can drive recklessly because they see it in ad (even if they kill themsleves). Its the effect their actions have on everybody else. These people never think anything is their fault and we as a society have to protect ourselves from morons like this.
