National Post lives on
The rumour mill was abuzz on Friday with speculation that the National Post might have to suspend publication if CanWest Media wasn’t allowed to restructure its assets. Thankfully, the courts have agreed with the CanWest proposal and the Post will live on.
The thought of a Post-less Canada seemed to fill some readers on the CBC’s web site with glee. They had little good to say about this award-winning newspaper, which made its debut in 1998. Many condemned the paper for its small “c” political leanings and took great delight in its current misfortunes.
Truth is, the Post is a quality newspaper with an outstanding line-up of editors, writers and journalists. Robert Fulford (arts and culture), Diane Francis (business), Christopher Hitchens (politics, culture), David Frum (politics), Bruce Arthur (sports) and Conrad Black (politics, business, culture) are among the finest writers of our generation, and they can all be found on the Post’s pages. However disagreeable their views are to some, they deserve to be heard.
Critics point out that the Post continues to lose money, suggesting the paper should be put out of its misery because of ongoing financial mismanagement. Yes, the Post continues to swim in red ink, but its losses are lessening. By the Post’s own admission, the paper is gaining online readers, and revenues are growing.
The National Post has been given a new lease on life, and I hope it continues to do what it does best: producing a lively, entertaining and informative newspaper that supports a variety of voices.
